New York City Mayor Eric Adams warned that duplicating the current riots in Los Angeles will “not be tolerated.”
“The escalation of protests in Los Angeles over the last couple of days is unacceptable and would not be tolerated if attempted in our city,” Adams said Monday while speaking alongside NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
What began as an aggressive protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Los Angeles over the weekend descended into a full-scale riot that entered its fourth day Tuesday. To quell the violence and restore order, President Donald Trump activated nearly 2,100 National Guard troops.
Trump also announced Tuesday that he will send 700 Marines from nearby Twentynine Palms to assist the National Guard in dealing with the more violent offenders and protect public property.
“I want to assure all New Yorkers that we have the best police department in the world,” Adams said. “Men and women who are prepared to handle any issues that may arise, especially when we are faced with deep division in our society.”
In an effort to ensure that the streets of Manhattan do not become like the streets of downtown Los Angeles, Tisch said commerce and property will be protected.
“Let me be crystal clear: We have no tolerance for violence, none,” Tosch said. “We have no tolerance for property damage. We have no tolerance for people blocking entrances to buildings or blocking driveways or blocking cars from moving.
“And any attacks against law enforcement will be met with a swift and decisive response from the NYPD. … We are responsible for public safety and maintaining order in this city. And we will never abdicate that responsibility.”
Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., suggested that Trump’s rapid deployment of the National Guard was a “premeditated reaction.”
Espaillat, who serves as the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and represents New York’s 13th congressional district, said Trump has no interest in addressing the concerns of the protesters and is “itching to escalate this further rather than to resolve it.”
