CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Walmart has decided to close their Neighborhood Market on Shallowford Road.
They call it “an internal decision.”
“We’re grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Shallowford Road location. We look forward to serving them at our other Chattanooga stores and on http://walmart.com.”
The store is in front of Dalewood Middle School and across North Moore Road from Boyd Buchanan.
It lasted five years in one of the city’s so-called food deserts, an area that is under-served by grocery stores.
Other stores have closed over the years on Brainerd Road and Shallowford.
The closest chain groceries now will be in East Ridge and Highway 58.
Councilman Russel Gilbert, who is running for Mayor, noted the loss for his district.
“I received the notice today and upon confirming it, I must inform my constituents of the Fifth District with a heavy heart that the Shallowford Road Walmart Neighborhood Market will be closing on March 26, 2021. I would like to thank Walmart for the years that they have served the Brainerd community, they have assured me that employees will have the opportunity to transfer to other Walmart locations. I hope that we will have new opportunities to work with Walmart in the near future.”
Walmart officials noted Councilman Gilbert’s efforts to bring them to the Dalewood area in 2016.
